Other features include: iPod and XM HD surround compatibility, built-in FM tuner, RS-232C for custom installation and a wide variety of beam settings, including My Surround Beam, for a true multi-channel surround sound experience from a single component. The YSP-4000 applies the Digital Sound Projector technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is true multi-channel surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system ¿ but without the need for extra speakers! As amazing as it seems, the YSP-4000 can actually deliver multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners the same way that sound from front, center and rear speakers does. DVD movies and other digital sources sound just the way they are supposed to. Dolby Pro Logic II is included, so even 2-channel TV's sound can be heard in true multi-channel surround. Its elegant space-saving design avoids the need of numerous speakers and cables. It can be wall mounted or placed on a shelf or rack. The YSP-4000 has a powerful and efficient digital amplifier built in. It powers the 40 beam drivers at 2W each and the two woofers at 20W each, for a total of 120W of power. There is no need for the customer to purchase an additional amplifier or receiver. | | | |

Product not well built. Jul 28, 2010 I purchased this new sound "Projector" in February, 2010. Sound went completely dead suddenly, and now needs to be sent out for repairs--I could not fix problem using Manual for use. I consider this product both poorly build and unreliable, and I've been buying electronic sound products for 50 years.
best soundbar for the money Jul 01, 2010 pros:
- best simulated surround for the money & space
- looks good
- price (the price has dropped significantly since its original release making the current price a bargain.
- easy setup
cons:
- additional cost for mounting brackets
- no sub-woofer included
- 2 hdmi inputs (great for a simple setup but not enough for extensive systems)
- complicated remote

Simply the best for the money Jun 13, 2010 I have been investigating "sound bars" for close to two years. This unit is NOT a sound bar, its a sound projecter and there is a HUGE difference between the two. I owned a 200w 7.1 surround sound system (200w per speaker). While this unit does not replace the sound from that system it does sound incredible and is well worth the loss in sound quality for the freedom from wires and the speakers crowding my living room. I have compared over 30 different brands and listened to the offerings that are available. This is by far the biggest bang for your buck. I have not found any that can even compare to the sound quality from this unit. Plenty of connections and HDMI for most people and easy set up. Spend just a little time researching and I think you'll come back to this Yamaha. It's a winner.

Good sound, complex setup, poor design of inputs, DVD video does not pass through Apr 16, 2010 1) Interms of sound quality, I am no audiophile. But I think the sound is good enough for my ears. I like the integrated design, so my entertainment center is not so cluttered.
2) But the setup steps are very complicated. Maybe all of these systems are the same. But I bet a lot of people out there may be completely lost and intimidated by the thick book of instruction and tedious set up process.
3) The input/output panel (where you plug all the wires) is poorly situated. You cannot see the inputs if you don't flip the system, which is very heavy. The input/outputs are all out of sight except the three HDMI plugs. Maybe Yamaha intentionally designed it this way so the cables are out of the sight. But it is in the back of the system. They are out of the sight anyway.
4) The DVD video input has some problem. It does not pass the video signal to the TV. Basically I did as the instruction says: I connected my DVD player to the system (DVD video/audio out to the system), and I connected the system to my TV (system video/audio out to TV video/audio in). Audio works perfectly. But video does not get pass-through. I have no idea why. I also connected my Wii through Aux 1. That did not have any problem. Obviously I can connect the DVD video directly to my TV. But I want to use this system as the central gateway. And the system was designed to serve that purpose. I think the system has a malfunctioned DVD video input (the regular RCA video input/yellow colored).
I am ordering component video cables to see whether that the video will pass through component video inputs. I will update you once I find out.

Perfectly capable to be used for surround sound and a/v receiver Mar 09, 2009 Coupled with a subwoofer, this is perfect for the person who wants a movie experience without the overload of multiple speakers, receivers and wires. You can't go wrong, best surround bar on the market.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
