The New YSP-3000 offers great new features such as 1080p-compatiable HDMI, iPod compatibility and wide variety of beam settings including My Surround for true multi-channel surround sound enjoyment from a single component. The YSP-3000 applies the Digital Sound Projector technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is true multi-channel surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system ¿ but without the need for extra speakers! As amazing as it seems, the YSP-3000 can actually deliver multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners the same way that sound from front, center and rear speakers does. DVD movies and other digital sources sound just the way they are supposed to. Dolby Pro Logic II is included, so even 2-channel TV's sound can be heard in true multi-channel surround. Its elegant space-saving design avoids the need of numerous speakers and cables. It can be wall mounted or placed on a shelf or rack. . It powers the 21 beam drivers at 2W each and the two woofers at 20W each, for a total of 82W of power. There is no need for the customer to purchase an additional amplifier or receiver, so the system is compact and economical.

4Practical!  Apr 25, 2010
My thoughts on this unit are as follows...

very easy to set up
Nice looking
very practical
much-much better than any TV speaker
great for bedrooms/dens/offices
***However****
If anyone wants to go the easy route of buying this for true/dynamic surround sound,,,think again. Under no circumstances, this will replace a 5 speaker system! Compared to a good 5.1--7.1 system, the YSP sounds contained and weak. For this amount of $$$$ you can buy an receiver/sub/and 5 bookshelf speaker that can beat this any day.

4Pretty Much What I Expected  Jan 06, 2010
Six months ago I bought a Sony S-Air wireless surround w/blu-ray, a total POS!
If this soundbar hadn't been priced at $1,000 then it would've been my 1st choice,
Anyway, this system gives what I expected (I've got doorways/windows/drapes for interference)a roomful of sound, even tho' not really surround. Got the Yamaha sub-woofer free.
One complaint, remote was non-op and I had to return to Yamaha, on my dime, before I could set up system. 10 day delay, Amazon no help!
BTW, hooked up with an LG 390 Blu-Ray DVD player (worth every $$).

4Great product but some oddities  Dec 02, 2009
I am still playing with many of the features but already there are some oddities that may give buyers pause.

Tuning FM stations and setting preset is done oddly from the supplied remote. I cannot even begin to describe it. It is not at all intuitive.

The remote allows you to control a TV and another AV device but is very limited. For example, changing the input source on my Samsung LCD TV requires selecting enter after you scroll through a list of sources. The TV controls provided on the remote include only a few TV control buttons, none which are enter or select, so I can bring up and scroll through the source list but I cannot close it. I am still switching between remotes. This is of course a mix of Samsung and Yamaha oddities.

There is no system connection terminal port to support the YST-FSW050 subwoofer being promotionally offered with the YSP-3000. There is no system control port at all. Odd with the YSP-3000 acting an AV receiver substitute.

The height is just a bit too high for placing it on the same surface with many LCD televisions. I know the technology may be the limiter, but there could have been some effort to shorten the height to accomodate most of the televisions being sold.

All the connections except the HDMI connections face down. The gap provided for connectors is not always ideal. I have had to substitute my Monster Toslink cables with more generic cables because the terminator on the Monster cables are too long to fit underneath. I could see other cable terminations suffering a similar limit.

They provided a stick-on cable clip but no suggestions on best placement. I put mine in a spot I thought ideal and discovered after it would have been better rotated 90 degrees. Unfortunately the tack on the stick-on is so high, I cannot even attempt to remove it without tools.

I may discover more oddities as I go, but I thought I'd let you know there are oddities to consider. Yamaha makes a solid product but then controlling, configuring, and placing the product may frustrate many.

I bought this about 7 month ago when I got my first 50" plasma screen.
Very good sound, lots of settings for differentsounds. Farily easy to set up. NO PROBLEMS at all.

4Good but not perfect  Oct 19, 2007
When I first heard about the Digital Sound Projector from Yamaha I thought it would be a prefect solution for my family room where I do not (or cannot) run the cables to hook up rear (L/R) speakers. I pre-ordered YSP-3000 from Amazon in September 2007.

I have the YSP-3000 hooked up in my family room for more than a week now, here is the list of good and bad about the device:

The good:

- Excellent sound quality with Dolby Digital 5.1 supported sources such as my digital cable box (via HDMI interface/cable).
- Setup is easy. You ran Intelibeam from the device; in less than 20 mins you got a customized sound projecting environment. You can always tweak the settings manually but I found the auto-setting works just fine.
- YSP-3000 also functions as HDMI switch (1 output, 2 inputs) where you can switch audio/video between DVD player and cable TV without selecting input source from your TV set. That is, connect the output HDMI port off YSP-3000 to your TV, then connect your cable box and DVD players to YSP-3000. You only need to use the YSP-3000 remote to choose between DVD and cable box.

The bad:

Here is my biggest problem with YSP-3000. It does NOT support newer version of Dolby Digital TrueHD, nor Dolby Digital Plus off the box!!

I hooked up a Toshiba HD DVD player (model# HD-A30), and guess what, my audio channel on YSP-3000 became 2-channel stereo instead of 5.1. To by pass this problem, I had to hook-up my DVD player using optical audio connection as oppose to HDMI, and change the video output from HDMI to component video output. By doing so, I no longer can switch between DVD and cable using YSP-3000, and (in theory) receiving less quality image because I cannot use HDMI for my DVD.

I contacted Yamaha support, I was told that YSP-3000 does not indeed support Dolby Digital TrueHD nor Dobly Digital Plus, which have became the standard audio format for every HD DVD movie shipped out there. My Toshiba HD DVD player only offers three choices of audio output 1) AUTO (which is the one I am using, and it is recommend for digital sound), 2) PCM (which is 2-chanael, not 5.1 with surround sound, and 3) Downmix PCM, which is also 2-channel instead of 5.1.

So I have the latest Digital Sound Projector (YSP-3000), with latest HD DVD player (Toshiba HD-A30), with latest HD-DVD movies yet I cannot enjoy 5.1 sound environment without downgrading my video output from HDMI to component. That's a shame. I hope there will be a firmware upgrade in the future with either Yamaha or Toshiba devices (by the way, I already updated the firmware on Toshiba HD DVD player to v1.1, which is the latest as to date) to provide support of DD+, or DD TrueHD.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!

Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)

The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)

"
Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."

Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
