USER MANUAL STINKS Mar 14, 2010 YAMAHA MUST GET SOMEONE FOR WHOM ENGLISH IS A PRIMARY LANGUAGE TO WRITE THEIR MANUALS. I WENT THROUGH A TRIAL & ERROR METHOD TO FINALLY GET THE YAS-71B SOUND BAR TO OPERATE.
CONNECTIONS THAT NEEDED TO BE MADE WERE NOT ADDRESSED IN THE MANUAL. ALSO, WOULD IT BE A BURDEN ON YAMAHA TO INCLUDE THE NECESSARY CABLES FOR A PROPER HOOK-UP.
HAVING TO MAKE A TRIP TO RADIO SHACK FOR CABLES IS NOT APPRECIATED WHEN SPENDING A COUPLE OF HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A SYSTEM.
Met my Expectations Mar 04, 2010 I was looking for a better sound solution than just the sound from my Samsung PN50B650 Plasma. I knew going in that the soundbar would simulate a 5.1 system but not be true surround sound. I did not have a problem as I only wanted better quality than what was being delivered from the TV speakers. The Yamaha sound bar delivered what I was expecting. I was originally looking to buy the Vizio soundbar with wireless subwoofer but when I saw the Yamaha on sale for only $10 more I got this as it seemed from the specs that it had much more sophisticated decoding capabilities (Dolby DTS Etc.) and Yamaha has a good reputation for its DSP decoding. The unit looks great. Blend well with the TV. The sub is unobtrusive visually but you really notice its presence. Hook-up is a snap. I have optical cables running from the HD cable box and the DVD. I could have run one optical direct from the TV but I read that you would get better sound by coming right from the boxes on the Samsung Plasma. You have 4 modes to choose from: Movie, Sports, Music and Games. The sports mode worked really great for the super bowl. Expanded the sound field, added a little reverb. The announcers voices came from dead center with crowd noises spread out behind and to either side. Sounded nifty. For about $260 this is a really great solution if you don't want to run a bunch of wires. With a little more money I would invest in a good audio/video receiver, center speaker, two book shelfs off to the side and a small sub. This would get you a lot better sound without all the wires from a true 5.1 setup, some surround capability as most good receivers are capable of simulating with this kind of setup. However you would probably spend at least $600 to $800 minimum.
Stereo for Entertainment Center Mar 02, 2010 Bass is good, but the stereo effect is a bit lacking. In a medium size living this system provides adequate performance. Having a couple of optical audio inputs allows connection to the TV and BD/DVD player. Also have an older Sony jukebox connected using rca cables.
good value Feb 15, 2010 if you insist on super duper sound quality, don't get this one. it is, however, a noticeable improvement over the tv set sound.(samsung plasma) i hooked mine up to my direct tv satellite box with no difficulty. (you will need an optical cable and probably another one for your dvd. as others have noted--no hdmi plug.) the sound is good at moderate levels and it looks good. sound works independent of tv sound. the subwoofer is wired with about a 6-8ft cord to the sound bar. good value at current prices. so-so on the surround sound aspect of it. lot of fine tuning adjustments. i would get it again. meets all my tv needs.
What I Expected Feb 12, 2010 This unit is definitely no replacement for true surround but I knew that going in. If you are looking to simply enhance your tv's speakers then this absolutely does the trick. Easy set up too.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
