Welcome to the Next Generation in Home Audio. Mar 10, 2010 The main selling point of this receiver is its HD Audio capabilities (Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master-Audio)and this was my main motivating factor for purchasing the RX-V663. Upgrading from a Denon AVR-1706, I was not sure what to expect from Yamaha. It certainly has a "crisper" and more powerful sound than the "mellow" sounding Denon, which is a good thing considering that my Polk Audio Monitor Speaker setup have silk-dome tweeters which have a laid-back sound. The combo of Polk Audio and Yamaha achieves a great balance in softness and punch, which brings a full-bodied audio experience. 95 watts is plenty of power to drive all of your speakers (My main towers have a tweeter and 4 cone woofer drivers each) There is even an alternative configuration that allows for main channel Bi-Amping.
The sound that this 7.2 Receiver produces when playing a Lossless (TrueHD or DTS-HD) Blu-Ray, is nothing short of thrilling. The only circumstance that I would not recommend this receiver, or any other Yamaha, is if you intend to use a Klipsch Speaker setup, the horn-loaded tweeters mixed with Yamaha's bright sound is a little harsh on the ears. Other than that, this receiver is a must have for next generation audio. The sound from this device is so good, that the next upgrade "step" from here would likely have to be reference grade audio gear, something that would cost a grand or two more, with likely only a marginal improvement. Other higher model receivers feature video upscaling, more HDMI outputs, and slightly higher wattage, not really dealbreakers as far as im concerned.
For Playstation 3 Users,
Keep in mind that PS3 does onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-MA decoding, therefore the Yamaha will display "PCM" while playing Blu-Rays. This doesn't mean that TrueHD or DTS-HD is not being played, its just being output via PCM. The lossless codec is indicated by checking the PS3's On Screen Display during Blu-Ray playback. You're hearing the exact same thing, only drawback is that the "TrueHD or DTS HD" indicator light will not light up on your receiver, but you get to enjoy these codecs nevertheless.
Incredible unit with mega features Jan 19, 2010 This thing is amazing.
Right out of the box you plug it in, turn it on, and it works great.
There are plenty of input and output options.
Then there are advanced features that are well beyond anything I could ever imagine using.
For having 600W of power I am AMAZED how cool it stays
Difficult for me to figure out Jan 09, 2010 The small printed tips was hard to read for me and difficult to understand. Maybe a geek can figure it out but after a month of owning this product it's not easy for me to understand. But most people can probably figure out all the settings. I can only get 720 instead of 1080 but I think i will be able to figure it out in time.
Reciever review Jan 07, 2010 Again Yamaha hits a home run, allthough the manual is hard to understand,
a nice quick cheat sheet would be nice
Yamaha RX-V663BL Jan 07, 2010 The receiver works and sounds great. I would recommend this product to others looking for a mid-price range unit.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
