Personal Experience Dec 10, 2009 This is a great receiver - when it works. The sound quality and customizations available are unmatched in this price range. You will need a PhD in electrical engineering to fully appreciate (and use) all of the complex features, but if even a basic enthusiast can enjoy this thing - again, when it works. But I won't repeat what others have said about the features.
The problem I have had is that mine has lost video output from the one HDMI out - TWICE. The first time was about after a month of use. The audio was still transmitting and the component out worked just fine. I should add that this came on with ZERO warning. Worked fine one night, the next day - black screen. I did the basic troubleshooting first, yada yada, then took it into my local service center (and was without my unit for 3 weeks) where it was repaired at no charge by replacing the entire board. Then, my unit worked as expected again for another 8 weeks or so until the same exact problem happened again - no HDMI video out, everything else kosher. This time I called my local repair shop and they told me that they have no other ideas other than swapping out the board again, so I should call Yamaha instead, which I have done. I'm currently awaiting Yamaha's response. In the meantime, I bought a $400 Sony 7.1 receiver from Best Buy two nights ago in a pinch (I paied $1100 on Amazon for this unit), and bashfully, I must say that I cannot tell the difference yet in quality (only that it doesn't look or feel as "fancy"). I tend to think that "durability" and workmanship are why some units are more expensive - unfortunately I cannot attest to the durability of my particular V3800.
For what it's worth, I have a basic home theater (projector, receiver, 7.1 surround, blu-ray, PS3, etc.) with all of my equipment drawing power through a Monster power conditioner and surge protector and a 25ft HDMI cable running through the wall and ceiling to a ceiling-mounted projector, also plugged in locally into a conditioner/protector. All of my video components are connected via HDMI. All that is to say that I have a common setup with the basic/foreseeable safeguards. So I'm really at a loss on how to rate this product. I hate when users give 1 star ratings and the like based on quirky, idiosyncratic experiences, so I hesitate to do that. Perhaps I got a lemon? Perhaps others have had no issues? All I can say is that after two rounds of the same problem, this would-be 5-star unit is only 3-stars in my book.
**One other thing. Ergonomically, I think this model has a minor design flaw. The HDMI out is really really low on the back of the unit, and to the far rear left end, so it runs the risk of bumping into things. But since mine was just sitting in the entertainment center, stationary, I really don't know what role this played.

The Yamaha RX-V3800BL Home Theater Receiver Jun 26, 2009 The Yamaha RX-V3800BL 7.1-Channel Network Home Theater Receiver is an awesome piece of equipment. I can't begin to rephrase the manufacturer's product description, but in our experience, the Receiver lived up to everything that Yamaha promised. It works seamlessly with our TV, BluRay, iPod dock, etc., and is a wonderful radio in itself (yes, we still listen to the radio!). And our sound system (the Klipsch Quintet SL Home Theater System) responds well to the variety of sound qualities that the receiver can produce. We are really glad that we decided on this model--it's well worth the price.

Yamaha RX-V3800 Review Mar 29, 2009 I purchased the 3800 about a month ago from 6 ave Electronics through Amazon. I upgraded from a Sony STR-DE 897. I have to say it was a significant upgrade. I was skeptical of how much better a more expensive receiver would make, but it really did. The sound clarity from each channel is significantly better. I run Polk RTi A5 fronts, RTi A 6 Center, and RM surrounds. I have read reviews stating setup is difficult. I disagree. It was very easy. I especially like the auto speaker calibration with the supplied Mic. The one thing I would suggest is the Pure Direct option for watching movies. The sound quality is significantly better than any of the Recievers Choices. Overall I feel this is a great receiver for the price.

Great replacement receiver Mar 12, 2009 Replacement in the sense that we had hurricane style rains for weeks straight and my roof leaked directly above my home theater equipment - of course!
I digress, this was offered as a replacement by the insurance company from another Yamaha receiver from at least 7 years ago.
This has been a wonderful receiver and although the remote doesn't look as cool as the old "silver surfer" with a front flap, it's far more usable.
I docked it a star because the one thing I think it lacks for this price point is dual HDMI outs. I use this with a home theater PC and would like to run both inputs into the receiver with two outputs, one to a projector and another to a small LCD monitor.
Other than that one small issue, highly recommened.

Better than Nice!! Jan 31, 2009 This was my dream system. I saved for it and I am enjoying it.
Nice for the money, some engineers have tested and reviewed this receiver and have said that this model performs with other models in the $10k price range. I believe it! My friends have said that with the 64" Tv and the polk speakers the sound quality is the best they have ever heard for a movie whether at home or the movie theatre, Money well spent! What a setup from all who have watch movies at my home. You could spend much more but I think for the price, you would not receive any value for it.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
