Excellent May 14, 2010 Excellent price quality ratio. Sound is warm and well balanced. This receiver is for old fashion lovers, 2 channel output + a woofer.
I paired it with JBL L830 3-Way 6-Inch Bookshelf Loudspeakers using bi-wiring connections. Sound is crystal clear, strong mids and deep bass.

Quality Product Apr 26, 2010 I purchased this item to replace an aging Sony receiver/amp that was on it's final lap. As expected, Yamaha's build quality and performance does not disappoint. This thing is built like a tank and the sound it produces is unmatched by any stereo I have ever owned or heard. My only regret is that I did not purchase the less expensive (and less powerful) RX-397 as the power of this model is major overkill for my needs. However, the RX-397 has fewer input sources and I felt I should leave my options open in case I needed to add system components in the future.
If you have a decent pair of speakers (I have 35 year old Bose 501's), this stereo will absolutely blow the windows out of a normal size home. Unless you need the extra power (75W per channel is a very conservative rating) and features that this amp offers, I would take a long look at the lower end RX-397 model.

Very disappointed Feb 21, 2010 I have owned Yamaha products for decades. Very few of them, in fact, because they have always been reliable and have lasted forever. So it was an easy choice when I needed a new receiver/amplifier. I didn't seriously consider any other brands. I've always found Yamaha's product to be solidly built, high-quality, and good value. Unfortunately, I have had a bad experience with this unit. I hope that it is an isolated incident.
I purchased this receiver in October of 2009 and took it with me to install at my business in Mexico. From the beginning I had difficulty get components to work well with it. At first I blamed my speakers, but tested with another receiver and they were fine. I upgraded connection cables and seated them as well as I could and finally got decent sound if they were pressed in just right. All was fine for the moment.
Then just last week, the receiver went dead and began to smell when turned on. Quite literally, something fried. It is not a problem with the electricity because all other items work fine, and it is plugged into an advanced solar-electric system generating perfect sine wave AC (I'm not hooked to the Mexican grid).
Because I am in Mexico, there is no easy way to get warranty work on it without bringing it back to the US, something I may have to do if I can't find some type of repair service here. Overall, I'm very disappointed to have spent the time and effort and had the equipment last barely a few months. Again, I hope this receiver is the anomaly because I have heretofore held Yamaha in high esteem.

Yamaha RX-497 Feb 03, 2010 Great middle of the line receiver. Being able to hook up my 25 year old Pioneer turntable was a real plus.
The sound quality is awesome through my 4 Bose 601's.
I am also using it to push a 5 disc CD changer and dual casette decks.

Best 2-channel analog receiver ever! Dec 23, 2009 This receiver may seem cheap but it is definetly worth it. I use a Sony Super Audio CD player with it, and floorstanding B&W 684 speakers. And this receiver sounds great! It is dead quiet, no hiss (when listening to newly recorded music with a straight-to-DSD transfer), and never clips. I would say I play it faily loud but enought to rattle the windows.
And it's also perfect for vinyl, as vinyl sounds best on a %100 analog receiver/amp. This has no digital processing what-so-ever - so there's no screaming cpu chips for Yamaha to quiet down.
Also note this is a 2-channel (aka: stereo) only receiver so it does not do suround-sound.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
