Lacks Basic Functionality. Sep 02, 2010 As a standard def audio receiver, it works as it should. For a HDMI capable receiver, it is utterly useless. It has "HDMI Pass-through" which basically means it works an an expensive switch box. It takes the HDMI signal, and forwards it along to the TV. That is it. It does not decode the audio, it does not decode or upscale the video. It cannot process the audio from the HDMI. Yes, the HDMI capable audio receiver cannot process HDMI sound. If you want sound from your blu-ray player, you have to use an HDMI cable to pass the video through, but then you ALSO need an optical or coaxial cable to send the audio to the receiver. There is absolutely no reason for this receiver to even have HDMI. It would me much simpler to plug your blu-ray player into your TV via HDMI, and then use an optical or coaxial cable to the receiver. Why even use the HDMI on the receiver if its not going to do anything but add an extra HDMI cable to your setup? The only use for the HDMI on the receiver is if your TV happens to have only one HDMI port, but you have two HDMI devices. Unless this is your situation, stay far away from this receiver.
A SLEEPER WITH A BANG Apr 11, 2010 I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on receivers from Sony, Onkyo, NAD, Carver and a few others, but never considered Yamaha...my new philosophy regarding electronics is not to spend over $200.00 on this type of item and if and when something should go wrong, just toss it and start over...Most everything that has emanated from China has a life span of about one and a half years to hopefully three years, however, not likely...products that are manufactured in China usually fall within those parameters, yet, products assembled in China but parts made elsewhere, have a better chance of surviving than those made there.Getting to the point of the Yamaha HTR-6130BL, Yamaha designed a small monster, as it powers through the five point one speakers I have set-up...My last receiver, an Onkyo, only three years old, gave way to that, what I have aptly called, "The China Syndrome." I have no idea what caused it's demise but from day one, it was plagued with functions that never worked or functions that worked but not as claimed or proposed...The Onkyo was four times the price of the Yamaha HTR-6130BL and it never, ever sounded as clear, definitive and powerful as the $200.00 Yamaha...I am and continue to be very pleased with the purchase of this Yamaha receiver. The HTR-6230BL 500 Watt has many functions as well as sound fields, a port for an iPod as well as a Bluetooth Adapter for other Bluetooth products that may be used with the HTR-6130...I am not an engineer nor do I have any extensive electrical knowledge, in testing electronic devices for a HomeTheater environment. What I do have, however, are two ears and I know what I like, which is all anyone needs to have in rating this type of equipment...For the price, I could not have found a better, more well-equipped receiver and the outlet that sold it, Discount Jungle, was as welcoming and helpful as could possibly be. Amazon and it's Marketplace of retailers is the only way to go and with Yamaha quality and engineering, it is a perfect marriage. I shall surround myself with Yamaha electronic equipment from this point on. Quality, price & features form the framework of this great company.
Good reciever Nov 02, 2009 Works very much as advertised. Probably not the best receiver I've ever had, but perfectly adequate for a small home theater and CD playing application. I haven't gotten around to installing the rear speakers yet, so I can't comment on the surround sound, but it drives two pretty hefty (and old and inefficient)stereo speakers and a center speaker very nicely. It is big, so plan on having some room available. This isn't for a small, unobtrusive installation. No regrets......got my money's worth plus a little.

Don't waste your money Oct 21, 2009 I bought this to replace an older receiver, and this one was on sale at Radio Shack. I learned all too quickly why it was on sale:
1) The manual seems to have been written by the technician who put the receiver together. It is very difficult to follow, takes hours of reading and interpreting to figure out, and its instructions are cryptic.
2) The so-called HDMI is a joke. Read the other reviewers - they say it much better than I can.
3) After approximately 3 months of use, the sound frequently includes a high-pitched screech. This occurs on every channel; does not occur via the DVD output, tho. Not only is this annoying, but it indicates to me that the unit is very cheaply made.
That said, I HIGHLY recommend you NOT purchase this unit. I'm going to try and sell it on eBay and replace it with an Onkyo (that's what we have in the living room).
Its great for the money Oct 12, 2009 Let me start by saying I am the furthest thing from an expert when it comes to sound. That being said this was very easy to configure. I like how many ports there are for input, but I don't like that there is no s-video and you can pass all the video through HDMI (or audio through HDMI). I think it sounds great for a 500 watt system. Both me and my friend enjoy this system way more than the 1000 watt RCA system I had before (that system was from Wal-Mart and cost $150 for the receiver, sub and 5 speakers). If you are looking for something cheap to hold you over till you can really spend the cash on a system this would be a good receiver to start with. I would recommend reading the manual as well not because its complex to set-up or use, but just so you understand the features and how to use them. I also recommend getting a good subwoofer and center speaker it makes a world of difference. Another thing I like about this system over my previous one is start up time. I never noticed how long it took to switch from one input to another till I got this receiver. It takes maybe 2 seconds from start-up to listening to sound. When it comes to speakers just remember this receiver is only 500 watts so there is no need to buy anything over 100 watts (including the subwoofer), I am using 3 different kinds of speakers (cause that's what I had laying around) and I am happy with the way everything works together. The last thing I would like to say about this receiver is don't bother with the tuner for radio its garbage, but do make an attempt to utilize all the ports, if you don't have digital audio cables or component cables buy some and run everything you can through the receiver it will make component switching so much easier and there will be less fluctuation between quality.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
