Sounds pretty good (when it turns on) Jan 07, 2010 I purchased the VX-10 about a year ago. I'm not an audiophile technically speaking because I cannot afford to be an audiophile, but I do enjoy quality sound. When I purchased this sub, I knew it wasn't going to deliver the rich, deep, accurate bass response that a much more expensive sub would achieve. I was just hopeful that, for the money, it would provide adequate sound until I could afford something better. My first impression was very good. For the price, it delivered better performance than expected. I hooked it up to an Onkyo 705 and placed the sub in a niche located in the corner of our 14 X 17 living room with 15 foot ceilings. The niche really does help resonate the low frequencies throughout the room. So as far as sound quality goes, the VX-10 is a great entry level sub.
NEGATIVE: The problem that I have had with the VX-10 is that it does not stay "on" at low volume levels. There is no on/off switch on the sub. The sub has an auto "on/off" feature that is suppose to sense a signal from the receiver to determine when the sub should be turned on or off. This signal sensor apparently is not sensitive enough because the sub does not turn on at lower volumes. I have to crank it to mid volumes for the sub to kick on. Quite annoying. I have tried many adjustments on the sub and my receiver, but nothing seems to correct this problem. I even saw that some recommended splitting the mono sub cable with a "Y" splitter and hooking it up to the left/right channel on the sub. Did that too and no luck. I contacted Velodyne and they could not provide a solution.
Bottom line: The sub's sound exceeded my expectation, but none of that matters when the sub is not working properly. No one else seems to have this problem though. Maybe just unlucky.
Excellent entry level sub value Oct 04, 2009 I owned this sub for a year or so after becoming frustrated getting a down firing (higher end) subwoofer to sound right in a large, rather odd-shaped room. Having the rear port and being able to control its reflections to ideally tweak the phasing with larger mains was my reasoning behind this selection.
This is a very satisfying subwoofer, although bass extension isn't spectacular and it produces a fair amount of port noise on the lowest notes. It's a great sub for music and excellent for the money, and a definite step up from integrated home theater subs. Unless you push this sub too far (and produce a lot of port chuffing) or you really know what truly deep bass extension feels like, you will be completely happy with this sub--especially for the price. The 10" driver is also reflective of the price, having a foam surround vs a more durable rubber one.

Bad@SS Little Woofer!! Aug 26, 2009 Bought this little guy with an employee discount @ "Lie's" Electronics over 3 years ago. Paired with a Denon AV unit, has been set up in a few different enviroments, always isolated from the ground and placed in multiple locations until optimum sound was achieved. I thought the 100w was going to be lacking, but I'm looking for a quality "punchy" type of bass, not some numbnut driving down the street, bumping whatever eMpTyV's serving to the masses, rattling every panel on the car in order to get peoples attention...
Have not had a single complaint from the neighbors downstairs, while watching films at fairly high volume... Thing still rumbles whole living room in action sequences, with about 18' high ceilings & hardwood floors. This thing has not let me down yet in 3+ years, and I've recommended this sub to lots of people over the years. Can't beat the bang for your buck!!!(Especially in my case, as I got it for under $100,lol!!)

It's not what you think Jul 27, 2009 I have one of these sitting in a closet somewhere or did my wife throw it out. This thing stopped working after light use in about 6 months. Velodyne is a respected name in the subwoofer industry but this thing does not cut it . Good velodyne subs cost a grand and then some. Quality control is sacrificed on the cheaper models. Also the power rating is misleading. Your sub has to be able to handle more than 100 watts especially when paired with a good quality amp. Don't buy it because of the name. If you want a cheaper sub deal with companies that specialize in that category. Velodyne won't get another dime of mine.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
