55 years later: still going strong  Jul 27, 2010
I bought this TV 5 years ago when we renovated the apartment.
I bought it with my overtime money from the restaurant where I was working sacrificing my vacations.
I never looked back! We took good care of it and it still looks as good as when we bought it.
The fact that after 5 years it still costs almost $1000.00 is a tell tale of how well it was made.
It is widely aknoledged that Sony TVs are among thge verey best.

1Well that's over...  May 13, 2010
Well, it was a great TV while it lasted. Bought it a shade over two years ago and a couple of days ago the right side of the display started flickering and getting horizontal lines. After checking for interference, even though I had added nothing to my home that would cause it, I jiggled the set a little bit and it went away. I'm now reading that it will get worse, Sony won't help and will be too expensive to repair. I expected that a TV costing $2500 would last more than 2 years. I was wrong. No more expensive Sonys for me, Vizio here I come.

2Less than 2 years it needs to be repaired  Dec 14, 2009
The TV has been good until the 20th month when the rendering began failing in a small area of the TV. The failure appears to grow by pixel row/column and I don't know if the chip is failing/failed or if the screen is failing. Either way, I would expect Sony to provide manufacturing that would allow a $3000 TV to last beyond at least 3 years.

Ultimately, not impressed with its weak showing and lack of endurance from normal use. I recommend you really look at other brands before purchasing this model.

1If you are thinking of a Sony XBR, don't do it!  Oct 18, 2009
I have owned my Sony XBR4 for almost 2 years and it has been nothing but trouble. My 18 year old 27" Sony Trinitron has a better picture. The remote on this TV has to be pointed directly at the receiver and be no further than 5 feet away. Sometimes when you turn it on you get no sound. Sometimes when you turn it on the picture is good on half of the screen, the other half is dark. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'll update after I get it fixed again.

1Great set for a year and a half!  Sep 22, 2009
After a year and a half, my $2700 "dream TV" started to have issues. When I would turn on the set for the first time, the right half of the screen would be distorted or really dark. After about 10-15 minutes it would clear up and be great for the duration. Had a Sony cert tech (where I purchased the set) check it out. Said he had never seen this issue, nor did anyone at Sony. Finally diagnosed as bad panel. Repair cost $2500. Throughout the ordeal I had contacted Sony by phone and by email. Finally they agreed to replace the set with a new XBR9 for an additional $500.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!

Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)

The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)

"
Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."

Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
