Great Picture for HD, many sound problems Jul 30, 2010 I am somewhat disappointed in this unit, which I have owned for several months.
The picture is absolutely superb with HD, Blu-Ray or 16x9 DVD content. Over-The-Air content also looks great. You can select several video options, some of which make film seem so vibrant that you might think you are looking out a window (depending on the source).
While the picture on some sources is nothing less than startlingly good, other source material is disappointing. For example, the playback of some recordings I made with my dvd recorders, 4x3 satellite material, and other older stuff, like videotape is very disappointing. The problem is not that they appear low-resolution-- that would be expected, and actually artifacts are minimal. No, the problem is with aspect ratios. There are very limited zooming or stretching options for some sources. The display seems to "know" what options you would want, and only gives you the ones it thinks you want. This is frustrating if you know a DVD is 4x3 and the TV thinks it is 16x9 and won't let you "unstretch" it. I hate squishy pictures.
The other major problem with the TV, which others have noted, is the audio. Actually, there are two problems. ONE, the volume is very limited (depending upon the source). Oddly, the volume on-screen indicator goes up to 60, but the volume coming from the speakers does not actually get any louder after 40. The sense is that the unit is supposed to be half again louder than it is or something, but it does not get any louder.
TWO, there is a sound sync problem with some sources. Granted, this is a problem with many digital TVs, especially with analog source material, as the picture takes longer to process than the sound. Manufacturers thus put a delay in the sound so that it can "keep up" with the slower to process picture. The thing with this TV is that the delay for the sound sometimes appears to be too long, so the picture shows someone saying something before you hear them say it. This must be correctable using the settings for the TV, but I have not been able to find the settings to change it.
Since I watch a lot of 4x3 material (DVDs of old movies and TV shows) and still view some analog sources, this TV has been a mix of amazement and frustration.
Get this if you plan to watch digital source material (including blu-ray, streaming video, and HDMI-connected DVD players) or intend to hook it up as a giant computer monitor (which is great fun, by the way). This is especially true if you plan to use an external audio amplifier/tuner.
If you need to rely on its built-in sound system, watch a lot of 4x3 material or plan to view analog sources, be prepared for some work-arounds and adjustments. You will have to weigh the benefits of great picture against the costs of sound and source compromises for yourself.
QVC 07/18/2010 "Today's Special Value" - NOT Jul 19, 2010 My son and I were channel surfing and stopped when QVC showcased this magnificent "Big Boy"; after being mesmerized by the plethora of pixels and talk of "DLPs" "LCDs" and the "OMGs" mentioned by the articulate QVC con men. I then decided to go to my oasis, Amazon and check the reviews and current price. Amazon beats QVC's "Today's Special Value" by $200.00 today, not counting the savings in tax... Now, To be honest, I really have no idea what CCFL, or any of the other geek squad acronyms stand for???...when reading reviews on TVs, however I do know that this thing is a beauty and cheaper on Amazon... Just an FYI for all the OCD TV researchers out there.
My third Sharp Aquos Jun 03, 2010 I have owned this Tv for a few weeks now. I am very happy with my purchase. The TV was in perfect condition when I took it out of the box, it took two of us to put it on the stand of course. The box lifts up and the TV is packed very well in styerphone.
They called and set up the delievery time, they arrived on time.
I am very happy with the apperance, I have it on a black smoke glass stand.Looks like they were made for each other.
We have surround sound installed in our house when it was built, very happy that I had no problem hooking it up to the reciever. If I did not have the reciever with the surround sound, I am not sure I would be happy with the sound.
Overall I am happy with my purchase.
Also own an Aquos in our Den and Masterbedroom, happy with all of them.
Pleased with purchase May 22, 2010 We purchased our Sharp 60 in. LCD about two months ago and are very satisfied. This is our first large flat screen and it has fully met our expectations. It looks good, was easy to install, the picture and sound quality are great, and it has given us no problems whatsoever. I highly recommend this TV.

Avoid if you use ATT uVerse HD May 13, 2010 I viewed the 60" Aquos at a local store, and found it here for about the same price with no tax. I had it shipped to me, which took about 10 days. The first time I hooked it up, it seemed ok. The picture was middling range. The blacks could be deeper, the contrast better, and the screen was more reflective than my other Samsung LCD but it was a bargain at the price and I was satisfied enough at that price point.
Then I turned the TV off. The next day I turned the TV on, it immediately began flashing between 480P mode, and 1080P mode. So, it was switching between HD and non-HD modes. I also noticed the blue HD light on my uVerse box was flashing, so I assumed it was a weird issue with the box. I reset the box, and everything was fine...until the nexst time I turned the TV on.
Later, I came home and noticed the blue HD light flashing again even before I turned the TV on. Thus began a journey. In order to watch the TV, I had to reset the uVerse box every single time, or the picture would simply flash between HD and non-Hd mode, with the telltale sign being the HD light flashing on the uVerse box. I had never once had to reset the uVerse box for this reason prior to the day I got the Sharp and I had two other HD sets using that box previousely. It takes about 4-5 minutes for the box to reset so it was a pain.
So, I did some basic troubleshooting. I tried another HDMI cable, changed inputs, etc to no avail. I then noticed that if I simply left the HDMI cable unplugged when I reset the box the HD light stayed solid, but if I then plugged in the HDMI cable (with TV off) the HD light immediately began blinking. This in conjuction with the other evidence led me to strongly believe the issue lied with the TV.
I started a chat session with a Sharp Tech. He immediately said he had seen it before and had a solution. First he wanted me to make a setting change, and then he wanted me to update the firmware via a flash drive. I did both. I turned the TV off, waited about 10 seconds, turned the TV on and all was well.
However, I soon discovered that the problem only occurs if the TV is off for at least 30 seconds or so. So, the issue persisted for several days longer, and it happened every single time. If I wanted to watch TV, I had to reset the uVerse box without fail.
I called Sharp support this time. I explained and began to outline all of the above. The agent I spoke with was short, curt, certainly not very friendly, and borderline rude. He immediately blamed uVerse or the box, cutting me off before I could even finish the explanation and the other troubleshooting I had done. I told him the other tech had said he had seen this and acknowledged it was an issue with this TV, but he would have none of it and basically laughed it off. I told him (true) that I have both sold TV's and worked with electronics for 25 years, and I am currently a computer tech with a high level of technical knowledge and he basically laughed and was condensending. He said, well the TV can only show the signal it's given, and if your HD is going in and out, that is the box and it's not our problem.
So, I told him I didn't care for his whole attitude, that I didn't have time to be wasting calling AT&T and I was at least hoping for a "we're working on it" type attitude, but that with that type of response I would simply return the TV and get another brand. I called, and exchanged the Sharp for a Sony LED style 60" set. Yes, it was $900 more, but I didn't want my money going to Sharp at that point. I am not here to review the Sony other than to say that the picture is significantly better, better and deeper blacks, berrter contrast and color and a more matter screen with virtually no reflection. Watching a movie on this new Sony 60" beauty is breathtaking.
In any case, the new Sony came about a week later. I put the same HDMI cable in and lo and behold it was fine. That was 2 weeks ago, and I have not had to reset the uVerse box one single time since receiving the Sony, nor had to do it one single time on the two TV's prior to the Sharp. So, let's see Sharp. Four TV's - One uVerse box. Every single time I turned on the Sharp the box had to be reset. No other single time did the box need to be reset for that reason on the other three TV's. You still want to have the attitude that you don't have a problem with the TV? Pound sand Sharp. Your attitude lost you a customer for life.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
