5Built for rock!!  Aug 28, 2009
I originally bought these for my HT set up. After several months of having them in the HT system I decided to drop them into the main audio system in my basement to see how they compared to the Paradigm Studio 40's I've been using for almost 9 years. What a surprise indeed.

The Paradigms are not cheap and they perform very well indeed. However, the Polk's were able to provide a smoother mid range which blew me away. And at high volume levels they still were able to sound great without any colorization. Rare indeed. I have since left the Polk's in the main stereo system as I have removed the Paradigms. Not sure what I will do with them but they are too good of a speaker to get rid of. So if anyone tells you that the Polk R50 is not a good audiophile performer tell them, "Hogwash". Theses things were made for Rock n Roll and still sound good with Jazz and country. If you buy a pair you will be amazed at just how good these gems sound!!!

5One of the Best bargains amongs affordable loudspeakers  May 12, 2009
The Polk R series has proven to be one of the best bargains in affordable loudspeakers on the market. Any "sins" are of omission such as limitations, as they are impressively free of serious coloration and peaks that so often plagues loudspeakers in this market and real-world street price point.

The R50 is no exception, and may be the best bang for the buck of the entire R series. I've read comments that these are great for HT but no music - like heck they are! These are a revealing loudspeaker that is not forgiving of the cheap electronics they are likely going to be connected to. When I first purchased them, I had them on a 30 year old entry level receiver where the sound was so-so. Then as I upgraded to a new Onkyo receiver, let the Audyssey system do it's automatic setup, and enjoy.

Midrange imaging is impressive . As others have stated, you'd swear there was a center channel speaker installed. On the same token, these aren't so revealing that the image extends beyond the width of their placement - no 3D soundfield here. The image expands from speaker to speaker - no further, no closer or farther away.

Treble is pleasantly airy and natural, without any peak to add "zing" to the music. Dispersion is wide, sound is open, transistion from the mid-bass drivers is smooth.

Bass - now here is where I have to disagree with most comments about these. In my setup, running them as a sterep pair without a subwoofer, they have more than ample extension for real-world music reproduction. The bass extends below what their 50Hz -3db point would leave you to expect. If anything, if driven by good electonics, most people would not need a subwoofer for music (unless providing the block with music) - but would for home theater. I strongly suspect that those who have issues with limited, strained output are really hearing their receivers run out of clean power.

Now I've been an audiophile for decades. I've owned very good equipment both in electronics and loudspeakers over the years. In preparation for a move, I sold everything - now my move has been delayed and I was climbing the walls without music. To say that I enjoy listening to music through these speakers says a lot!

In summary, these may be from Polk's entry level point, but they are now emtry level schlock. How good they sound depends on what you are driving them with. Like the Advent Loudspekers of the 1970s (which I owned back then), they are affordable, but don't mate them with budget electronics and expect much. Spend the money you saved by buying these vs. another costlier model - and invest it in the best electronics you can afford.

Strengths:
Overall natural and neutral tonal balance. Tight, extended bass when used with good electronics for music reproduction. Airy treble and respectable midrange detail for this price point. Nice fit and finish for their cost.

Weaknesses:
At this price point, all audible sins can be forgiven. For many buyers who aren't knowledgeable of differences in brands of receivers, these may be too revealing of other component shortcomings. For those who drive these with good electonics, you'll notice a lack of "space" and 3D imaging - but again look at the street price!

5Unbelievable performance for the price.  Dec 21, 2008
I was looking for a replacement set of speakers and came across the R50s on Amazon. I had some doubt on the performance of these due to the low price, since I believe one usually gets what one paid for. However, I decided to go with these due to the fantastic reviews here and the Polk Audio brand name.

I ordered from Frys.com (like one of the reviewer recommended), and I got the speakers 2 days later. I hooked them up right away and couldn't believe the sound. The bass is robust but not boomy, the vocals clear and accurate. I could not detect any distortion every at very high volumes. You really don't need to add subwoofers with these. Also, these speakers are capable of very nice sound imaging as well. The speakers are well made in every detail, and look a lot more expensive.

It's been almost a month since I got these speakers and I'm still very happy with this purchase. A big thank you to all the reviewers and the hint on where to get the best deal.

5great but not excellent  Oct 12, 2008
Having recently purchasing a pair of monitor 50s & a pair of monitor 40s as well as a pair of R50s, I feel that I am uniquely qualified to rate the R50s as they compare to nearly the exact same speaker but a different line (the 'r' series compared to the 'monitor' series). These speakers are quite stunning in sound an appearance. The ONLY real difference in these three different speakers are really the one inch tweeter installed in the monitor series as apposed the the 3/4" tweeter installed in the 'R' series. I personally would not have believed that a slighly smaller dome tweeter would have made such a difference, but to put it plainly...It did. Having heard them both on a straight A to B comparison, I re-sold my R50s. I think that pretty much says it all. Thanx for listening.

5A good purchase  Jan 01, 2008
Its allways risky buying something over the net that you cant see or hear in person. I was happy with my purchase while you can spend up to a couple thousand more for speakers these are great for a moderate upgrade. I have a infinity surround sound speaker set and replaced the front two with these and could not be more happier. These are not bass speakers and do not give you the lows, but are not ment too. Purchase a powered bass and you will be pleased. I found mine for $59 at fry's and dont belive I could have found better quality for equal price, they sound as good as a $300 to $500 set for $120.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!

Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)

The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)

"
Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."

Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
