Magnificent Dec 14, 2009 I have been a long-time user of Martin-Logan products and knew both partners when they sold stereo equipment in Lawrence, Kansas back in the early 80's. My first product to hear was the Monolith and I owned the original Quest. When buying M & L you must realize that you are buying a piece of scientific equipment. One, you are purchasing an electrostatic panel and two, you are purchasing a speaker that will need to be placed OPTIMALLY in your room to get the best sound possible. Those rules are: Electrostatic elements DO NOT LIKE a smokey environment. If you smoke or you burn incense and/or candles, over time your electrostatic panels will accumulate a film that will affect the sound of the speaker. Since the panel has an electronic charge, it will have the necessary ingredients to form that film from air-borne contaminants.
Location, location, location. All electrostatic panels push sound from the front AND from the rear. If you do not have your speakers placed away from the back wall, you will find that the sound from the rear of the panel will be out-of-phase compared to the sound from the front. The two sounds will cancel each other either partially or fully making a muddy sound. You want the sound to be ideal since the sound pressure from the rear of the panel is what gives that "encompassing" sound that these speakers are known for. Ideally, you will need at least two feel of space behind the panel and the speaker will need to be toed in to eliminate that interference. If you have a room that is not large enough to place these speakers and still contain your large screen TV AND THE REST of your furniture, then don't purchase them, you will not get the enjoyment from them as you might think you will. If you follow the rules, you will have the most enjoyable speaker made by man.
Now the power. You may ask; "why does it have a internal power amplifier?" One of the early requirements with M & L speakers were that they were quite power hungry. Later models addressed that problem, but they still required a power amplifier that moved a lot of Current (amperes) not Power (watts). Consequently, people who bought these speakers also had a lot of money rapped up in an expensive high current power amplifiers. Since these M & L's have the power built in and are matched to the speaker, the extra money to purchase these speakers are well worth it. Remember, you are purchasing TWO mono-power amps when you purchase two speakers. That alone is worth at least $1200 if you were to purchase two high end power mono current amps by themselves. You can also use the speakers to play back any device that has a built in volume control and a line level output source, e.g iPod, Satellite Radio, even your computer. As a surround system, you will need at least four of these units plus a center channel or another one of M & L's speakers that are matched to these units. Remember, if you use self powered speakers you are running line-level signal wires instead of speaker wires that tend to loose efficiency over long runs as do the line-level signals but not as much and which are more stable.
All in all, these are probably the best value out there for a high end speaker that has the sonic wonderment that most people will marvel at. If you ever auditioned a pair of these speakers, you will not want anything else in your home.

I'm not so sure Jul 04, 2009 I had great expectations for this innovative speaker's sound, but was greatly disappointed. It is sleek and cool looking, but as far as sound is a concern, the audiophile level quality it's not there. I was trying them next to Definitive, and for less money, DEfinitive made them sounding cheap. I expected that for $1500+ sound should be much better. I actually liked their smaller speaker much better. It had better definition, better mid lows, better upper mids. Probably when combined with the rest of Logan's speaker set, they reveal the greatest. I was looking for nice stereo speakers and could not justify their price for the sound.

I dunno about these being inferior to Magnepans May 26, 2009 I have a pair of Magnepan's Magneplanar MG-IIIs (~$3k) that I love, but I have to tell you I was extremely impressed with the Martin Logans. Don't take anyone's word for it, if you're looking to spend >$1000 on speakers: listen to them yourself.
Besides, everyone's taste is different; lots of people (even) like the Bose sound.
Okay, so I'm a snob. But the bigger Martin Logans do sound terrific, and are much smaller and somewhat less temperamental than Maggies. (For example, my Maggies are 6' high, 3' wide, and have to be >4' from any wall. It's a good thing I have a really large den with high ceiling and a concrete floor. And it's a serious project to find a halfway-affordable amp that can drive them well.)

Maggies a better speaker at a better price Feb 27, 2009 MG 1.6 are 1750 a pair, and except for the bass, will blow these speakers away. Get a pair of the Maggies and a subwoofer, you'll be much happier.

Reviw and question Jan 15, 2009 I use the Purities in a 4.1 HDTV set up in a 13X18 bedroom. The sub is a Martin Logan Grotto. I use to own Martin Logan CLXs but they are the size of a door. The Purities bring back that same sound I enjoyed and remember. Truly remarkable for their size. The sweet spot is a little narrower than I recall but fussing with placement and toe in helped. Once dialed in the clarity and sense that you are there quality are magical.
I had planned on getting a fully powered Martin Logan Feature center when they were available. Now I am not sure I need or want one. Question: does a center with the Purities really improve the surround sound with DVDs or HD cable? Thanks

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
