1LG BD390 no longer plays ANY DVDs - "No Disc" error  Jul 28, 2010
I bought this LG BD390 in October 2009. Worked well playing Blu-rays and DVDs until last week (7/20/2010). It will no longer recognize any of my DVDs - even brand new ones that have never been opened or played. I started getting a "No Disc" in the upper left-hand corner of the TV with DVDs immediately after closing the tray [with a DVD in the tray]. The DVDs were at least spun as DVD position was changed when opening the tray after receiving the message. It will play all Blu-ray movies fine (still has some issues with Avatar, though). I have the BD390 connected to my network and have the latest firmware version (08.08.531). Contacted LG support to see if there was anything I could do to reset it or troubleshoot and "Gustavao" was not all that helpful. His "support" consisted of asking me to update the firmware version after telling him that I already had the latest version and his cut & paste of what to do with the product ($69 blah blah). "He" ended the chat session about 30 seconds after his "Hello?" - I had been reading his instructions when he was more than happy to end the session ("excellent service"? I don't think so....):

Gustavao: Hello Jason Xxxxx. Welcome to LG Electronics! How may I provide you with excellent service today?
Jason Xxxxx: My LG bd390 has stopped playing DVDs. It will play Blu-rays but no DVDs... This just started on Tuesday of last week. Was wondering if there is something I should check that may resolve this? I have tried about 40 undamaged DVDs... It has the latest firmware version (08.08.531 from April 2010).
Gustavao: I see.
Gustavao: Have you tried updating the unit to the latest firmware?
Jason Xxxxx: it says it has the latest firmware version.
Gustavao: Let me get you a link
Jason Xxxxx: I actually tried a DVD it had played the day before it stopped working and it will give me a message that just says "No Disc" in the upper left hand corner of my TV.
Gustavao: Because if there was an issue with the lense, the blu rays would not play either.
Gustavao: [...]
Jason Xxxxx: Blu-rays are working fine in the player...
Gustavao: Search under drivers and software
Gustavao: Try doing this update as stated in the instructions you would be able to get here
Gustavao: Once done, check to see if it helped.
Gustavao: If it in fact still does not work you would want to send it in to us so our techs could check the unit out for you.
Gustavao: It is most likely software related.
Jason Xxxxx: my bd390 is connected to the internet... i tested the connection, it says it is connected, and has the latest firmware version.
Gustavao: Ok.
Gustavao: hmm.
Gustavao: When was the unit purchased exaclty?
Gustavao: Exactly?
Jason Xxxxx: October 2009
Gustavao: Do you have the original purchase receipt still?
Jason Xxxxx: yes
Gustavao: In regards to repairing the unit, first we would send you free shipping labels via email, which you should get it in around 24 to 48 hours. Then you would want to send in the unit, with a copy of the sales receipt. In regards to the payment you would have to ways to pay for the labor, either through credit card or money order. I will also provide you with a case number that should be written on each side on the outside of the box. Please do not send in accessories with the unit (remote control, cables, etc). The labor payment should be in the facility before the technicians start working on the unit and the "repair and return" department will contact you in case there are parts needed for the repair so you can send the money in for the parts if you would like to repair it, if there are no parts needed for the repair, they will go ahead and repair it and send it back to you. This is in case your unit is no longer under the 1 year warranty for parts. For credit card payments you will need to contact our customer service department to the 1-800-243-0000 so you can get in contact with the "repair and return" department specific department that will take your payment. For money order payments, you will need to send it to LG Electronics, Alabama Inc. P.O. Box 240007 Huntsville, AL. 35813-6407. The process should take between 5 -7 business days after we receive the unit. Labor would cost $69, if you wish to pay via credit card you would need to call in to 1-800-243-0000.
Gustavao: This is the process if you would like to send it in.
Gustavao: In this case since the unit is still under part warranty, the parts should be covered. But you would still have to pay for labor fees since labor warranty was for 90 days.
Jason Xxxxx: ok... will you e-mail me those instructions with the case#?
Gustavao: That would be emailed by the repair and return department.
Gustavao: In from 24 to 48 business hours you should receive the email.
Gustavao: If you would want to send it in, we would need to set it up first.
Gustavao: Hello?
Gustavao: I apologize it appears I may have lost my connection with you. I will remain on the line for approximately 2 minutes before exiting the chat. If you have any additional questions feel free to contact us back via Live Chat or you may call 800-243-0000. Thank you for choosing LG Live Chat.
Gustavao: Unfortunately due to a lack of response your chat session will be ending. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us again via Live Chat or by calling 800-243-0000. Thank you for choosing LG Electronics. We appreciate your business. Have a great day!
Notice: Gustavao has exited the chat session.

So... he notes that Labor is 90 days. I believe I read in one of the reviews someone was told or understood labor to be covered for only 30 days. I don't feel that great about paying $69 + $20-$30 for shipping. Basically $100 for something I paid $269 for 9 months ago. A terrible and disappointing purchase even if Blu-rays work, for now. I still have two Sony DVD players I have had for 7 and 4 years that play all of these DVDs fine - not to mention the DVD players in both my Volvo XC-90 and Mercedes ML350.

Correction... This BD390 will no longer play the following Blu-rays and receive a "Check Disc" error:
Into the Blue
Fool's Gold
The Edge

All are flawless (no prints, smudges, dust, or scratches) and previously worked fine. I only have 24 Blu-rays - the others worked fine with initial (until it shows "Blu-ray Disc" on the screen in the upper left-hand corner) load times from 10 seconds to about 35 seconds.

1AVOID LG Blue Ray Players  Jul 27, 2010
About 10 months ago I bought an LG BD390. It was an expensive unit. I thought I was getting a quality player. I had a good DVD player, so it only played a couple new Blue Rays and no DVDs. It has played less than 10 movies. It is basically new.

The unit will no longer read either Blue Ray discs or DVDs. The unit attempts to read the disc and then displays "no disc". LGs customer support & warranty are basically worthless.

I see many others on the net with similar issues.

I have had DVD players last for years, the reliability of this unit is unacceptable. Save your money and avoid LG!

1Unit broke after less than six months and infrequent use  Jul 25, 2010
I purchased this unit at Bestbuy. The setup was relatively easy, although the remote is a pain, and it would be nicer if the remote was lighted. After less than six months, the unit will no longer play any disks. I phoned LG and a technician there walked me through an evaluation of the unit and said that it would have to come in for repair. The unit still works as a receiver for Netflix but anything that goes into the disk drive (the Blu-Ray player) is not recognized. The movie function is "grayed out" on the menu screen. There is nothing in the manual and nothing online about this problem but I definitely had the notion after talking with the technician that they have lots of problems with this issue of the Blu-ray disk portion of the unit breaking down. Considering what I paid, it seems to me that this unit should last longer before it breaks down. I didn't get an extended warranty, so the cost for repair is at least $69.00. The unit has a one year warranty, but so what? It shouldn't be in need of repair this quickly, especially since it isn't used all that often.

My recommendation: look for another brand.

3great picture, terrible wifi reception  Jul 25, 2010
As a blu-ray/dvd player this is a great box. Excellent picture quality, easy to use, reasonably organized menus and remote. The wireless reception is absurd. I have two laptops, a printer, and an iPhone that can see 11 wireless access points from my living room. The BD390 sees none of them. I sent it back for repair and they sent it back as "fixed", but still no difference. If I hold it up in front of a window I can get it to see one of the neighbor's APs. Anyway, if your wireless router is in the same room it's probably fine. I've resorted to running an ethernet cable from my laptop to the BD390. Netflix looks excellent, far better than from a web-based player.

1Support is AWFUL. Support staff not knowledgeable. Unable to get Netflix, or connect to Internet.  Jul 15, 2010
I have owned this unit for eight months. As a DVD player, it's really fine - good quality picture and sound. Most everything we've played on it has been Blu-Ray, so I can't speak to up-converting regular DVDs. Problem is that it frequently loses the Internet connection. I have called in about five or six times, to have techs walk me thru the set-up, again and again. Finally, after 30 - 40 minutes, they would get it to connect.

Last night, it happened again. The tech decided there was a problem in the unit, suggested I return it for a new one - then said "oops, you can't get a new one. You can get it repaired for $69. When I asked him to look back at all the times I have called in before, all about the exact same problem, he said "yes, but our policy is that after 90 days, you need to pay for a repair. This unit obviously is defective."

This is the kind of Customer Service that breeds ire, discontent or downright contempt. What has happened to Customer Service? apparently an oxymoron at LG.

Sorry to give this negative review, because as a DVD player, the unit is really fine. So I am reduced to using it as a nice DVD player (having zero confidence that LG actually knows what the problem is, or that I will not start the whole Tech Support merry-go-round again). I will get my Netflix from the mail, despite the fact that one of the main reasons I bought this unit was the streaming video. Certainly, I will NEVER buy an LG anything again. I have had an awful eight month experience with them, ending in failure.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!

Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)

The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)

"
Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."

Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
