Old School music buff May 08, 2010 My wife and I a few months ago moved off the farm after 30 years. I moved under the condition I get to update my stereo system so I recently purchased a pair of JBL L880's online at amazon.com sight unseen and unheard. Being an old audiophile nut (mid 50's# from way back I used to switch out my stereo system every couple of years until I got married and started to raise children. Sound familiar? That was 30 plus years ago. I have held onto a pair of Marantz HD550's ever since then. I have added on cd players and a small technics AV receiver almost 10 years ago. I also run a pioneer reel to reel and pioneer turntable. Both were top of the line way back in college. In my search for new speakers all there was to listen too were Paradigm Monitor series, PSB speakers and Yamaha NS 555's. The reviews on the L880's were very good so I took a chance. I was afraid there wasnt much out there that was affordable that could beat the high end sounds of my Marantz HD's. After weeks of research online and looking at technical charts, most of which I didnt understand, I said what the heck. Ordered the JBL's. JBL used to make Marantz back in my audiophile days so that was part of my giving these L880's a shot. I am not disappointed one bit. I willhave to say the JBL L880's are a very nice step up in sound. I dont need charts to notice the difference. I sit back, close my eyes and listen. They were as good as almost anything I was able to listen to. And I listened to PSB's in the price range of $5000,$2500 and on down. I will have to say the $5000 PSB's were a bit better. But I was not willing to pay for an extra $4000 unless they came with onstar, bluetooth or season pro football tickets. #Laughing) Probably more than the average person I like a lot of high end in a speaker and these JBL L880's have not disappointed me. I listen to a fair amount of contemporary jazz and main stream old and new pop music. I want to hear the tapping of the symbols and other intricate sounds that you usually miss on other lessor quality speakers. the biggest improvement over my Marantz HD550's was in the fullness of the mid range and bass frequencies. My lovely wife allowed me the use of the room next to the outside wall of an end condo, sound familiar guys? It is about 12'x20' and I cant push a lot of volume so I have to be careful how much low end I can use without bothering the next door neighbors. These 6 inch woofers are more than enough. On my new Yamaha AV receiver I have the bass at neutral and they are still noticeable. JBL could have put 5 inch woofers in and they would have sounded great. In cabinetry design these JBL's have a very nice solid wood grain cabinet. they are not as sleek and modern looking as the Yamaha's or PSB's or Paradigm studio series but I didnt feel like paying an extra $1000 for a nicer cabinet. I would recommend the black cabinets as they are most striking in combination with the silver color of the 5 drivers. I keep the grill covers off and am constantly looking at them. I dont think they would be as eye catching in the cherry wood cabinet. These ladies are heavy to move around so be careful my older audiophiles as there is nothing to grab hold off once they are out of the box. Dont hurt that back if you dont have too. I like other older audiophiles like my speakers as furniture. I want to be able to admire the looks of a fine speaker as much as listen to them instead of hiding them in a bookshelf or wall. I paid $395 each for these speakers and I consider these one of the best buys for the money. Rock on my old friends

Outstanding sound!!! Mar 10, 2010 I couldn't be happier with the look, price and especially the sound of my L880s. The full range of sound is covered exquisitely, high to low. From MP3s, to CDs and especially Vinyl, I couldn't be happier. I'll let the other critics give you all the scientific decibel junk. All I know is that my ears are in love. Surprise, surprise! Mar 06, 2010 Well folks, I am utterly in disbelief. JBL in my apartment. Shocking!
I've always considered myself a fringe audiophile. I say fringe because I've yet to drink the kool-aid. Partly because I can't afford it. But I read all the audio magazines Stereophile etc., and have been doing so since my teen years. And over these years audio has become my favorite hobby/pass time. I've lusted (amongst other things)over Thiels, Vandersteens,Thorens, Krells, ARC,C-J etc.
I had been doing research for the pass 6 months on a new pair of speakers to replace my 1-year old Polks. The TSi300's were a stop gap as I gradually build up my dedicated 2-channel setup. I, like everyone else, had gone bonkers with the HT bug.
The speakers I was looking at were the Revel Concerta F12, Monitor Audio Silver RX6 and of course PSB. On my way to Oz my yellow brick road became tarnished with dishonest (overly enthusiastic?)salesmen sprouting overly fertilized hyperbole. Fancy-smancy salesrooms and promises of prompt fast delivery in a week if I gave them my credit card number over the phone. A bridge way to far.
Now those speakers are in the opinion of many the cream of the crop in the under $2000 price line. All three prominent players in Stereophile's annual Recommended Components. To make thing short, the JBL Studio L880 were
also on Stereophiles list and they've been there since the beginning and to top it off they were available from my trusty Amazon. Free delivery and if I didn't like them they would pick them up. What's to lose?
I hooked up the black monoliths to my Onkyo integrated and but on a CD on my Oppo universal player. WOW! That's all I will say for now, wow! And there not even broken in yet.
More when they are. Which is why I give them a provisional 4 stars.OPPO BDP-80 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD and DVD-Audio (Black)Onkyo A-9555 Integrated Digital Stereo Amplifier (Black)
I'm back to amend my review. It's been over a week and things have gotten much, much better. I wont rehash what everyone has said. It's all true. These are absolutely stunning speakers for the money. The ability of these speakers to resolve detail that was muddled, unrecognizable or just not there with my pass speakers is amazing. I'm hearing detail from albums I've had for over twenty years that I've never heard before. It boggles my mind that a speaker can give you almost holographic imaging, wide deep soundstage and detail and yet sink into the deaths of a 35Hz bass note. And yet male voices and female voices are not affected by this bass. I said I wouldn't rehash but it's hard not to.
I take back my 4 stars and give the L880 JBL's 10 stars! If I were able to.
To all audiophiles, don't let the name deprive you of a wonderful product and experience. It is after all a 2009 Stereophile Recommended Component.

Out of this world sound !!!!! Feb 22, 2010 Hooked these up this weekend, bi-amp style to my new pioneer A/V receiver. Sound is unbelievable. I have heard music on cd and radio that I never heard before, in cds that i have listened to for years. The sound when playing TV is just as good. Could not be happier. Family and friends blown away. Best speakers on the market for the cost. Will buy another pair when I find some where to put them. I had a pair of Sony speakers that are a knockoff off version of these, no comparison. If you like great sound in any style music and TV, buy these, a steal at $ 395.00 each

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
