like most other reviewers the first thing i noticed about these speakers was how heavy and large the box was that they arrived in. after taking them out of the box i was both put off AND impressed by their size and weight....at the same time. these were an upgrade from an old pair of infinity reference 2001 speakers ive had since the late 90's and they were easily double their size and weight. keep in mind when setting up your sound system that even though these speakers are called "bookshelves" they are most likely more cumbersome than you would think.
when looking these speakers over i was again impressed by the beauty and build quality. i also own the jbl l890 towers and these bookshelves are just as beautiful as their larger cousins. the binding posts are set up to allow bi amplification and although i didnt use that feature for those of us with weaker amps it may come in handy. i was also impressed by the quality of the binding posts. very well done!
when you hook these things up u guarantee you will be pleased. i used my "a" and "b" speaker hookups on my avr so that i could do a side by side comparison of these with my old infinity's. the jbl speaker blew them away. the comparison wasnt even fair. then again, i expected this since they jbl's were larger, better made and much more expensive as well. regardless they sound fantastic. i was so impressed with the sound quality that i may get another pair of these for the bedroom. i almost feel that my first pair is being wasted as surrounds to my home theater.
after hours of critical listening i found the highs and mids to sound simply incredible. i wasnt particularly impressed with the lows, and you shouldnt be either since this is just a bookshelf but, the overall sound was very musical and lacking nothing. again jbl manages to produce soaring highs without causing listening fatigue from harshness, something many speaker systems cant avoid.
overall i would definitely recommend these speakers to anyone seeking a high quality above average sized bookshelf speaker. i would also recommend these to anyone who wants a nice bedroom sound system or even as the main speakers in a home theater. i would however suggest that these speakers be paired with a subwoofer if they are to be used for music. the sound is excellent but they are still bookshelves, not full range towers.
These "little" speakers kick! Jul 23, 2010
I started out cheap and wasn't very happy with the sound for my HTPC. Should have known better as I have a pair of JBL36s from the 70s that are crystal clear.
Fast forward to today. These L830s provide crisp, clear sound. Not a perfect match for the L36 so the L830s are wired direct to the Monitor for now. The monitor also feeds the amplifier attached to ES20s, CS26, pair of Polk Subs and the L36. The total combination of these is good, but I see a pair of L820s with the matching LC2 in the future.
As others have mentioned, these speakers are deep and heavy for something considered "bookshelf". Plan accordingly

Excellent price-quality ratio. Sound is crystal clear, strong mids and deep bass. I paired with a Yamaha RX-497 receiver using a bi-wiring connection. Sound is warm and well balanced. Strongly recommended for all loving clear and warm sound.

JBL has done it again! The JBL L830s are, without a doubt, the best sounding speakers you can get for that price! Not only do they look stunning and are superbly constructed, but the clarity, imaging and overall quality to the sound they produce is flooring! I had been told about JBL quality by a friend in the business, and after hearing a sample, I was convinced that the next speakers I'd own would be JBL. When I played music on them for the first time, I was really taken by the imaging of these speakers. I could see in my mind where all the instruments were placed, and it sounded like the vocalist was sitting right in front of me in my room! The JBL Studio L series are professional grade, studio/theater quality sound, for a very affordable price and I believe that anyone who appreciates good sound will dig these speakers.

Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
