Crystal clear sound with modern looks. Jun 29, 2009 4 stars based on appearance and crystal clear sound quality. It loses 1 star based on cost.
Packaging was very good, double boxed, and no issues with shipping.
Mythos 10 was an upgrade from a Mythos 3 center. It's definitely a better center that produces lower frequencies compared to the Mythos 3. Audyssey MultEQ was run which set the cutoff frequency to 80 hz for the Mythos 10. With the old Mythos 3, the cutoff was 110 hz which was too high, 80 hz is much better for a center speaker.
I'm using Mythos STS as fronts which seems like a great match. Center speaker is very clear and the dialog sounds realistic, has power to spare. Those who like Def Tech sound, should check these centers out.

Very good on-wall speakers Nov 27, 2008 I have owned these speakers for about 3 months. Shortly after moving into our new house we decided for cosmetic reasons to replace our Mitsubishi rear-projection set with a new Pioneer Elite Kuro 151-FD (60") plasma. My powered Polk towers with matching big center channel speaker and surrounds (which I love) just didn't go well, so I looked at options of both in-wall and on-wall speakers and eventually decided to go with on-walls for practical reasons of installation. After a lot of research, I settled on Def Tech and feel that these are probably the best on-wall speakers going for any semi-reasonable price.
My set-up is 3 Mythos Tens for front left/right/center channels, 2 Mythos Gem XL for surrounds, and a SuperCube I for sub. Total cost for the system was just under $4600.
A few words about the Mythos Tens. They were very easy to mount. The included mounting bracket has two keyhole slots, and two machine screws on the back of the speakers just slide in. Simple and secure. The only problem is that the included screws were not really long enough to fully insert and still reach the bracket. A quick trip to the hardware store for a couple of longer screws fixed that, but it was an annoyance. The brackets mount very flush--given the curve to the back of the speakers, the mounting brackets only add about 0.25" projection from the wall. The brackets do not pivot in any way.
The black aluminum finish looks very good, and mated well with my set. The height of the speaker mounted vertically is almost exactly the same as the height of my 60" set.
The speakers are really meant to be wall-mounted only. While there is an included foot to sort of balance one horizontally for use on a shelf as a center channel speaker, I don't feel it's very secure. There is no way to stand the speakers up vertically as the ends come to sharp points which will not balance.
The specs for frequency response given by the manufacturer are very misleading on the low end. I found some sound lab testing in an AV magazine, and the lowest usable bass is around 60-70 Hz. You will definitely need to mate these with a good powered subwoofer for full range. I currently crossover to the sub at 80 Hz and that seems pretty much ideal.
The off-axis response for the speaker mounted horizontally is fair, a common issue with a woofer-tweeter-woofer arrangement. Our room isn't huge, and it hasn't been a major issue for us.
As far as sound goes, I would rank it as excellent. Initially there was a little bit of "brittleness" to the high end, especially notable on stereo music (which I listen to a lot), but after a couple weeks of breaking them in that has disappeared and the treble is much rounder while still being crisp.
Of note, Amazon is one of only 4 or 5 authorized online dealers for Def Tech speakers. Like many companies, Def Tech's warranty is void if you don't buy from an authorized dealer. I have gone out on a limb before and not gotten burned yet, but when dropping $4600 total on these speakers, I decided to go with an authorized dealer (paying retail price) and avoid the possible nightmare if anything went wrong. YMMV. Before purchasing the speakers I had e-mailed Def Tech customer support with a couple of questions, and they were very prompt (less than 24 hours) and thorough in their response.
Why not 5 stars? Mostly price (which is a bit steep), somewhat misleading specs (that is, no +/- dB in the listed frequency response), and minor mounting bracket niggles detailed above.

Consumer Reports Says Buy Your HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (October 31, 2008) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2007 and June 2008. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its December 2008 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com and Crutchfield.com came closest.
